America’s Workforce – Empowering All
Reflecting a commitment to a robust and competitive American labor force, the 2018 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) theme is “America’s Workforce – Empowering All!” Observed each October, NDEAM celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents.
The Philadelphia “Employment 1st, Employment NOW!” Steering Committee is once again celebrating this event with a month of employment success stories. Each day we will be posting another success story about someone who is contributing to their community through employment. For those who have requested to receive our employment announcements, you will receive the link to the story in your mailbox. We invite you to join us as we celebrate the successes of people with disabilities working in our communities!
Albert, the Entrepreneur!
October 14 – Albert W.
Albert W. has successfully established his own business: selling pretzels to his community. Over the past two years he has secured several locations in the Northeast Philadelphia area to sell pretzels. Albert sells pretzels 2 days a week at PATH’s Vocational Program. He runs his own business with some assistance from the folks at PATH and RHD. His PATH job coach meets Albert at the Philadelphia Pretzel Factory before each shift to assist him with purchasing any needed items.
Albert handles the money and makes the transactions, getting help from others as needed. Running his own business has helped build Albert’s self-esteem. From handing out pretzels to accepting money and providing change; Albert is able to run his own business with a little bit of help from his team
When the sales are done Albert counts his money and works on budgeting for his savings account and for his business. He arrives to work with a big smile on his face, and is greeted by all of his customers. Everyone at PATH knows Albert and looks forward to his arrival. His business is a huge success! Albert is currently working on expanding his business to different locations, and has the idea of purchasing a gum-ball machine to expand his offerings!
